Shatin Tin Sum Village Tai Ping Qing Jiao Festival sha tin tinsum

The gate of Tin Sum Wai was built around the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. It has been renovated several times since then. It is mainly used to defend against thieves and protect the villagers. In the past, there was a moat surrounding the village to strengthen the protection. There is a shrine inside the gate to guard the gate. There is an ancient Bagua hanging behind the gate to block the evil spirit. Although the gate has a long history, the Antiquities Advisory Board decided not to give it a historical rating in 2010.

The gate of Tin Sum Village and the village houses inside were where the villagers lived in the early days. As the population grew, the distance between each row of houses is now only wide enough for one person to pass through.

In the past, the Japanese Village was surrounded by farmland, and the villagers made their living by farming. Because it was located on a relatively low plain, irrigation was easy. Later, due to the continuous development of the government, many water sources were cut off, making farming difficult. After the war, many villagers left Hong Kong to make a living overseas, and many small family-style industries appeared near the village, such as plastics, bleaching and dyeing, furniture and rattan products, as well as some hardware factories and garages. However, the development of new towns has wiped out this appearance. Today, the "Tin Sum" village is no longer located in the center of farmland, but is surrounded by large housing estates and roads.

Lung Hang Estate, opposite our village, was built along the perimeter of the mountain. The ancestral tombs of our village are still preserved at the foot of the mountain behind Lung Hang Estate.

Tin Sum Street outside the village is named after the village. It connects Hongmei Valley Road and Chegongmiao Road.
